Press information.
The story behind The Brown Dog of the Green Glen stretches back to the Scottish Highlands of 1859, where a folklore collector named Hector Urquhart transcribed it from the recitation of John MacDonald, a travelling storyteller who carried it entirely in his memory. MacDonald could neither read nor write, but he told his stories with such fluency and performance, changing his voice and acting out each character, that Urquhart noted he repeated them almost word for word every time.
That a story passed down through generations without ever being written down should find its way into a modern picture book read by families around the world is exactly the kind of journey that great folk tales make. The same instinct that kept this story alive for centuries, telling it aloud, performing it, sharing it, is what drives parents today to read to their children at bedtime.
Ross Wilson, a Scottish author originally from Edinburgh now based in Spain, is available for interviews, features, and podcast appearances.

For Schools and Libraries. A classroom-ready resource for emotional learning.
The Brown Dog of the Green Glen is designed to support emotional literacy in preschool and elementary school settings. Its check-in pages, visual emotional language, and non-prescriptive approach make it easy to use as a standalone read-aloud or as part of a wider social and emotional learning program.
Ross is available for school visits, author readings, and virtual classroom sessions.

For Therapists and Support Professionals.
The book is already in use in therapy settings and counseling programs as a story-led way into discussions about feelings, fear, and bravery.
Its visual emotional portraits and structured check-in pages make it particularly effective with children who find direct conversations about emotions difficult, including autistic children and those with sensory or emotional processing differences.
